The commissioning of a new 375MVA transformer at Powerlink Queensland’s Belmont Substation is expected to further secure Brisbane’s electricity supply.

Powerlink Chief Executive, Merryn York, said the transformer was an important link in Powerlink’s transmission network.

“The new transformer ensures the ongoing reliability of electricity supply for Brisbane’s CBD, southeastern suburbs and Port of Brisbane.

“The huge 200 tonne transformer was delivered to Belmont Substation by a five prime mover convoy that pushed and pulled it from the Brisbane Port via the Gateway Motorway.

“Working with assets of this size and sensitivity presents challenges but our team were able to commission and integrate the transformer over approximately six weeks without any major issues.

“The new transformer converts high voltage electricity from Powerlink’s transmission network down to a lower voltage suitable for Energex’s distribution network, which in turn delivers electricity to households and businesses.”
