Western Power has removed hundreds of poles in Perth’s east, with Maylands becoming the latest suburb to welcome underground power in 3000 homes and businesses.
As part of the State Underground Power Program (SUPP), the utility removed 445 poles and 24km of overhead cable and installed 374 LED streetlights within the City of Bayswater.
This means about 3000 customers will now benefit from improved streetscapes and increased resilience in power supply.
The works follow recently completed upgrades in South Lake East, where the State Government successfully removed 300 power poles and 14km of overhead cables in Perth’s southern suburbs.
As of 2025, SUPP will be replaced by the Targeted Underground Power Program (TUPP), in which underground power will be delivered where it is most needed throughout the network.
The Western Australian Government said this won’t change the availability of underground power, which will still be available to local governments on a cost-sharing basis with Western Power, local governments and property owners.
Western Australian Energy Minister, Reece Whitby, said undergrounding power is an important way of building a resilient network and creating leafy green suburbs.
“Now 3000 more households and businesses in Maylands are benefiting from it.
“This is an important milestone that will deliver improved streetscapes throughout Perth’s eastern suburbs.”
Western Australian Maylands MLA, Lisa Baker, said families and businesses across the electorate had been eager to see this project deliver a more liveable streetscape.
“Now we can do much more to improve our tree and green canopy and bring some much-needed shade to our streets.”
