Hydro Tasmania is carrying out works to repair a damaged wind turbine at its Huxley Hill wind farm on King Island.
The company announced it had successfully transported 25m-long blades from Devonport to King Island on the John Duigan, with TasPorts’ Bass Island Line crew overseeing the delivery.
Hydro Tasmania’s consulting arm Entura is overseeing the repair of the wind turbine, which sustained damaged from extreme wind conditions.
Entura project manager Kristian Payne said transporting components at this scale required great skill.
“The logistics behind transporting blades of this size requires careful planning, coordination and collaboration,” Payne said.
“From loading the blades in Devonport to safely delivering them to King Island, this has been a complex operation and we thank TasPorts and Total Freight Solutions for their expertise and support.”

Bass Island Line general manager Toby Terry said the successful delivery highlighted the versatility of the John Duigan and his crew.
“Managing cargo of this scale alongside regular freight services requires disciplined planning and precise execution, particularly when operating within the constraints of tides and vessel stability requirements,” he said.
Entura is initially carrying out repairs for the turbine’s tower and concrete foundation, before replacing the nacelle and installing the new blades.
Hydro Tasmania recently completed the refurbishment of four wind turbines on King Island, which have all been returned to service, with only minor works still to be completed.
The company expects to complete wind turbines works by the end of 2026.
