With some of the best wind resources in the world, it’s no surprise that wind energy continues to gain momentum in Australia.

In 2024, wind was a popular topic for Energy readers – from offshore wind to new onshore wind farms to decommissioning retired wind equipment, there was no shortage of news stories.

Here, we’ve rounded up the top five.

  1. More offshore wind projects approved in Vic

The most popular wind story in 2024 revolved around the growth of the Gippsland Offshore Wind Zone, when in July the Federal Government granted the final six wind projects feasibility licences, bringing the total number of approved projects in the area to twelve.

  1. Hunter offshore wind offered preliminarily feasibility licence

Similarly, in June, our readers were most interested in the Federal Government’s preliminary decision to shortlist the offshore Novocastrian Wind project for the next stage of the feasibility licensing process.

  1. Decommissioning by design: reusing and recycling wind farm infrastructure

The third most popular wind story was a feature from our June issue that looks at the decommissioning process and what the industry can do with retired wind infrastructure when turbines reach the end of their operational lives.

  1. $569M NSW wind farm approved under strict conditions

Fourth was the planning approval of the Bowmans Creek Wind Farm in February, with the New South Wales Independent Planning Commission imposing strict conditions on the development, including a reduction in the original number of turbines proposed.

  1. Partnership to enable Australia’s first offshore wind projects

Last up was the news that Siemens and Marathon Group had signed a memorandum of understanding to support the delivery of the proposed offshore wind projects off the coast of Gippsland, including securing the energy transmission corridor and working collaboratively with the community and local business to support the region through the energy transition.
