Solar power continued to shine as a hero in Australia’s energy industry in 2024.

The sector celebrated a range of exciting new projects and commitments as we charge toward 2050.

Let’s take a look at the five most popular solar stories on Energy this year.

  1. Milestone for NT solar farm

Our top read solar story in 2024 was the July announcement that the SunCable project had been granted environmental approval. The 2000ha large-scale solar farm will deliver renewable energy to Darwin via a high-voltage cable, and to Singapore through a high-voltage undersea cable once complete.

  1. Qld Gov unveils $5.5M solar recycling pilot program

In April, our readers were interested in a solar panel recycling pilot designed to guide better practice in Queensland’s renewable energy sector by improving industry engagement with communities.

  1. Contract awarded for Aus largest grid connected solar project

The third most popular solar story this year was Genex’s announcement in May that it had selected Arup as the owner’s engineer for the Bulli Creek Solar Project, set to become the country’s largest grid-connected solar farm.

  1. Port of Brisbane extends solar sharing initiative

Next up was the August announcement that Port of Brisbane had signed a new contract to allow it to continue sharing excess solar across its sites through a Virtual Energy Network (VEN).

  1. Australia’s largest remote grid solar farm opens

Finally, Energy’s fifth most read story of the year was the official opening of APA Group’s 88MW Dugald River Solar Farm, which began delivering reliable, lower emissions energy to the Mount Isa region in March, marking the activation of Australia’s largest remote grid solar farm.
