Powerlink Queensland has approved a grid connection request from Hanwha Energy Australia to support the latter’s greenfield BESS in Tangkam.
The 100MW/200MWh BESS, located about 150km west of Brisbane, will leverage an existing Powerlink substation to connect to Queensland’s transmission network.
The facility will support an estimated 150,000 households during evening demand peaks, and provide critical grid services, including system inertia traditionally supplied by coal and gas assets.
“Battery energy storage systems such as the Tangkam BESS project are the way forward for delivering a cleaner, greener and more reliable energy future for Australians,” Hanwha Energy Australia general manager Alberto Costa said.
“By storing energy and making electricity available when communities need it most, this BESS will help stabilise the grid, support the growth of renewable energy, and ensure Queenslanders benefit from a more sustainable and resilient power system.”
New BESS projects are now popping up all across Queensland.
The 400MW Belah BESS in the Western Downs region of Queensland was federally approved in October, with LP Renewable Projects (LPRP) and Eku Energy working on the build.
LPRP is also developing its Goombi renewable energy hub, including a 800MW wind farm and 600MW BESS, alongside TagEnergy, and a southern/central Queensland energy hub, comprising 80–100 wind turbines and a utility-scale BESS.
The 1200MWh Stanwell battery is another Queensland BESS being developed, boasting 324 8m-long, 38-tonne battery units all up.
