Businesses across Central Queensland have been invited by Powerlink to register expressions of interest (EOI) for a raft of works packages to reinforce the electricity transmission network around Gladstone.

More than 100 local businesses have expressed their interest to date over the 54 works packages available, with the utility calling for others to register before applications close on 30 April 2025.

Powerlink particularly encouraged Indigenous businesses to apply.

Over the next decade, Powerlink will strengthen and increase the capacity of the electricity transmission network in the Gladstone region to meet growing demand driven largely by current industries electrifying their operations.

The project will include new transmission lines and infrastructure such as substations and associated equipment.

Powerlink spokesperson, Chris Garlick, said 169 expressions of interest have been submitted for the works packages from more than 100 local businesses so far.

“Central Queensland businesses make up a third of all interest, with 63 per cent located in Gladstone, 24 per cent from Rockhampton and 5 per cent from Banana,” he said.

“We are also encouraging Indigenous businesses to look at the packages and be involved in the project.

“This is an opportunity to showcase your expertise and contribute to a project of state-wide significance.”

Powerlink is in the process of appointing a primary contractor to lead the reinforcement of its transmission network in Central Queensland.

The utility said businesses that have expressed an interest through this process will be introduced to its primary contractor, once appointed.

To ensure their information can be shared, interested suppliers need to have registered through the Industry Capability Network (ICN) Gateway.

“Of all the local suppliers who have applied so far, more than a third have worked in Powerlink’s supply chain already,” Mr Garlick said.

“We are committed to engaging even more local businesses to build the capabilities and resilience of local economies.

Powerlink said it is an opportunity to be part of a project that will have lasting benefits for Queensland’s electricity infrastructure and local economic growth.
