Powerlink Queensland has signed an agreement to begin connection works for the 252MW Wambo Wind Farm, a joint venture between Stanwell and Cubico Sustainable Investments.

The project promises to anchor a third Renewable Energy Zone (REZ) in Queensland, with a total capacity of up to 2,000MW.

Powerlink Chief Executive, Paul Simshauser, said an agreement had now been signed, signalling the start of Powerlink Queensland’s connection works for the project.

Mr Simshauser said planning and engagement with the local community on the project had been underway for more than a year, in the lead up to the formal agreement being finalised.

“With the official notice to proceed now in place, we’ll be starting initial on-ground works, ahead of shifting into full construction phase,” Mr Simshauser said.

“The connection works include constructing 50km of new 275kV transmission line between our existing Halys Substation, near Kingaroy, and a new substation to be built at the wind farm site.

“We’re excited to see the Western Downs REZ taking shape and look forward to continuing to build on our strong working relationship with both Stanwell and Cubico.”

Country Head of Australia at Cubico, David Smith, said it has been great to work with Powerlink as the project moves towards another big milestone in the development of the Wambo Wind Farm.

“We are especially excited to be the foundation customer for Powerlink’s transmission line for the Western Downs REZ, an important step towards ensuring that Queensland meets its ambitious renewable energy targets,” Mr Smith said.
