A $13 million project to replace Powerlink’s Ashgrove West Substation is underway to ensure a continued safe, reliable and cost-effective electricity supply to north Brisbane.
Powerlink Chief Executive, Merryn York, said the substation had been in service for nearly 40 years and played a critical role in powering the CBD and north-western suburbs.
“This investment demonstrates Powerlink’s continued focus on planning for the future to safeguard the supply of electricity to metropolitan Brisbane,” Ms York said.
“The replacement project extends the life of the substation at the lowest long-run cost to customers and involves specialist crews removing aging substation equipment and installing new equipment, including circuit breakers, current transformers and switching equipment.
“All works will be completed within the existing Ashgrove West Substation site on Powerlink-owned land and will be staged over the next three years to avoid any potential impacts on electricity supply while works are carried out.”
Ms York said Powerlink aimed to conduct these activities with as little disruption as possible to the local community.
“We are committed to safe work practices and working closely with nearby residents to minimise any potential impacts in their local area,” Ms York said.
“All activities will also be undertaken in line with rigorous environmental management requirements.
“We thank the local community for their patience during these important works, which are expected to continue until late 2020.”
