Low-carbon fuels: A $10bn opportunity for Australia

The Federal Government believes the country’s first National Bioenergy Feedstock Strategy will help fuel a low-carbon future and unite industry on a common path.

The strategy, which has just opened for submissions, looks to leverage Australia’s untapped resources, where crop residues, tallow, used cooking oil and organic waste have the potential to drive down emissions in agriculture and forestry industries.

The National Bioenergy Feedstock Strategy will be focused on developing clear, coordinated direction to support sustainable production of bioenergy feedstock. This will support stakeholders in addressing key bioenergy challenges such as feedstock availability, infrastructure and technology needs, while providing a platform to build international partnerships.

According to the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, more than $10 billion of value could be generated from a bioenergy future, enabling the country to be a frontrunner in this space.

“Australia’s low-carbon fuels sector is at a historic turning point,” Bioenergy Australia chief executive officer Shahana McKenzie said.

“Momentum has never been stronger, and it will only accelerate in the coming months as both the National Bioenergy Feedstock Strategy and National Renewable Gas Policies are designed, the $1.1 billion government investment is deployed, and industry unites to fuel the next generation of low-carbon fuels.”

McKenzie said the Federal Government’s bioenergy commitment sends a “clear signal” to international investors that Australia is open for business in low-carbon fuels.

“With COP31 on the horizon, Australia is ready to lead in low-carbon innovation, turning ambition into practical, scalable solutions for agriculture, transport, industry, and energy,” she said.

“With our vast agricultural and industrial base, CSIRO reports that by 2025 Australia will have enough feedstock to replace 60 per cent of local jet fuel with SAF (sustainable aviation fuel), growing to 90 per cent by 2050.”

The Federal Government is seeking industry experts to contribute to the National Bioenergy Feedstock Strategy, as it looks to gain insight into infrastructure requirements, environmental, social and governance (ESG) obligations, and research and development needs.
