Jemena and Zinfra have released their 2022 Sustainability Report: A Year of Evolution outlining the progress made towards its Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Plan throughout the year,  along with a new online Sustainability Hub.

The report highlights steps taken by Jemena and its sister company Zinfra – both part of the SGSPAA Group – to deliver the Group’s Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) Plan throughout 2022.

The Group ESG Plan captures activities under way across the business as it works towards delivering its net zero ambition (for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions) by 2050, together with initiatives aimed at benefiting the Jemena and Zinfra’s people, customers, the broader community, and the environment.

Some key 2022 achievements highlighted in the report include:

Sustainability and Environment

  • Operating the Western Sydney Green Hydrogen Hub demonstration project, a “living laboratory’ helping to understand the technical and engineering challenges associated with introducing hydrogen into the gas distribution network
  • Construction of Australia’s first biomethane-to-gas network project
  • Improving the reliability of solar power on Jemena’s Victorian electricity network by 60 per cent, a year ahead of schedule

Safety and Wellbeing

  • Delivering safety training to more than 350 people managers across the business
  • Scheduling more than 18,000 training sessions for field workers, technicians and engineers to maintain and enhance their capabilities
  • Launching the first Procedure on Mental Wellbeing in the Workplace to set expectations around what it means to be a healthy and supportive work environment

Customers

  • Launching the Customer Accountability Charter, which sets out how Jemena and Zinfra will interact with its customers
  • Establishing a new digital portal for gas customers

Diversity and Inclusion

  • Retaining Work180 endorsement as a good workplace for women
  • Establishing three new employee networks – the Indigenous Employee Network, a Disability Network, and allyra, an LGBTQIA+ network

Corporate Social Responsibility

  • Contributing more than $700,000 in donations and grants to organisations supporting local communities – since 2019 Jemena and Zinfra have invested more than $2.3 million in communities across Australia
  • Supporting the Voices for Power program, which saw Jemena partner with Uniting Vic. Tas to deliver energy literacy training and support to more than 70 vulnerable customers. As a result of the sessions customers were empowered to take steps to help reduce their energy bills by an average of $650 per household

While the Sustainability Report provides an overview of Jemena and Zinfra’s 2022 activities, the new Sustainability Hub provides more detailed and regularly updated information for investors, customers, project partners, and other stakeholders.

This hub also includes an overview of what the Jemena and Zinfra are doing to help support the decarbonisation of Australia’s energy system, while enhancing the services it provides to its customers – including vulnerable customers.
