Iberdrola Australia continues to grow its Victorian footprint, completing its acquisition of the Ararat wind farm.
The addition of the 242-megawatt (MW) operation – the largest wind farm in its portfolio – brings Iberdrola Australia’s total owned capacity to 2.5 gigawatts (GW).
The company sees Victoria as a key growth market as it advances several workstreams. This includes being selected as a development partner for the 240km Victoria to NSW Interconnector West (VNI West) and holding a feasibility licence for its 3GW Aurora Green offshore wind farm off the coast of Gippsland.
Iberdrola also has rights to 100 per cent of the offtake from the 57.6MW Cherry Tree wind farm near Seymour.
“The acquisition of Ararat wind farm adds to our commitment to the energy transition in Victoria and to deliver reliable and affordable electricity for our customers,” Iberdrola Australia chief executive officer Paul Simshauser said.
Iberdrola Australia has established a strong presence in NSW, Queensland and South Australia across solar, wind and firming assets such as batteries and gas turbines.
Operating NSW assets include the Bodongara, Capital, Flyers Creek and Woodlawn wind farms and 245MW Avonlie solar farm, with the operating Lake Bonney wind farm and Port Augusta renewable energy park located in South Australia.
In February, Iberdrola Australia announced its Kingswood BESS had been awarded a long-term energy service agreement (LTESA) as part of the NSW Government’s sixth tender for storage facilities.
“This battery will be able soak up excess rooftop solar during the day and can supply electricity to around 65,000 households across New England and NSW during high peak periods in the evening,” Simshauser said.
This coincided with Iberdrola Australia officially opening its Smithfield BESS – a LTESA recipient in the NSW Government’s second tender.
