Grid connection secured for Isaac power station

QPM Energy has secured an agreement with Powerlink Queensland to connect the 112MW Isaac gas-fired power station to the state’s electricity grid.

Executing the Connection Project Delivery Agreement (CPDA) paves the way for construction to commence on the adjacent Moranbah substation, with the CPDA also key to Isaac’s finance facility.

Isaac will have a 30-year connection term with the goal of energising the plant by no later than the end of the 2026–27 financial year.

“This agreement is a major milestone for QPM and an important step toward development of the Isaac power station,” QPM chief executive officer David Wrench said.

“The project will deliver flexible generation capacity and provide valuable network support to the Moranbah region.”

The Isaac power station is seen as a key asset in supporting grid stability in Queensland’s “resources-driven regional network”, with the plant to provide dispatchable generation capacity.

Stage one of the Isaac power station will comprise two 55.6MW LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbines from GE Vernova, which are able to reach full load within five minutes of starting.

“Compared with other turbines and reciprocating engines, the LM6000 are relatively cheaper to operate and maintain over the life,” QPM Energy said in a June 2025 shareholder update.

“The LM6000 aeroderivative gas turbines are ideal for peaking and baseload generation and grid firming applications with the ability to start and stop multiple times per day if required.

“The units are also long-life assets, with first major overhauls not required until after ~7 years of operation under QPM’s feasibility study assumptions.”
