GenusPlus Group has been contracted to help deliver Equis’ Koolunga battery energy storage project in South Australia.

An $110 million contract will see Genus oversee the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning for Koonunga’s balance-of-plant scope and installation on a turn-key basis.

Located approximately 6km south-east of Koolunga, the 200MW/800MWh BESS (battery energy storage system) will plug into South Australia’s electricity grid via 1.2km of high-voltage cable connecting with the 275kV Brinkworth substation.

Genus managing director David Riches welcomed the opportunity to help deliver this project of state significance.

“This is a milestone project for Genus,” he said. “This contract gives us great confidence that the market sees our capability and capacity to deliver a project of this size and complexity.

“We look forward to working closely with Equis to deliver the project safely, successfully and on time.”

Genus will commence works shortly, with completion expected by September 2027.

Koolunga was selected as part of Tender 3 of the Capacity Investment Scheme (CIS), announced in September 2025. The tender, which was solely focused on BESS assets, tapped 16 projects across the country, with the Reeves Plains BESS the only other South Australian project recognised.

The CIS provides long-term revenue underwriting for emerging Australian renewable energy projects.

Koolunga forms part of Genus’ growing BESS portfolio, with the 100MW Merredin BESS in Western Australia another key asset.

Genus is undertaking the detailed design, procurement, installation and associated civil works for Merredin through a $65 million contract. This will be delivered over an 18-month period with completion set for early 2027.
