Scania has adopted UON’s SMART DC-FC fast-charging solution for its next-generation battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in Australia.

This partnership combines Scania’s latest electric truck technology, which recently received Australian Design Rules (ADR) approval, with UON’s proven expertise in heavy-duty charging infrastructure.

Scania’s BEV truck platform/chassis represents a new era for heavy duty transport in Australia, featuring advanced battery technology, enhanced driver assistance systems, and an estimated range of up to 400km, depending on the application.

The UON SMART DC-FC fast charger is specifically engineered to meet the challenges of Australian operating environments. The modular, rugged charging solution delivers rapid DC charging with CCS2 connectivity, liquid cooling technology, and intelligent energy management systems.

Critically, the DC-FC performs without derating in temperatures up to 50°C and carries an IP65 rating for protection against dust and water ingress – essential for operations in remote and harsh conditions.

“This partnership represents a turning point for sustainable transport in Australia,” UON chief executive officer Matt Prendergast said.

“Our SMART DC-FC solution was designed from the ground up to support the electrification of heavy-duty fleets in Australia’s unique and often extreme environments. By partnering with Scania, we’re ensuring that operators have access to both world-class electric vehicles and the reliable, fast-charging infrastructure needed to keep them running efficiently.”

The UON SMART DC-FC offers significant operational advantages for fleet operators. The system can be deployed in under 48 hours from the factory and operates effectively in both on-grid and off-grid environments.

Its modular design allows operators to start with charging capacity up to 350kW and seamlessly scale up as fleet electrification needs grow. The solution can charge Scania’s vehicle in under three hours, and vehicles such as the Ford F-150 Lightning in under 30 minutes.

“Scania is committed to helping our customers transition to zero-emission transport solutions,” Scania Mining Australia head of e-mobility Andreas Jonsson Viinikka said.

“Our BEV truck platform combines proven reliability with innovative electric powertrain technology. Partnering with UON ensures that Australian operators will have access to charging infrastructure that matches the capability and durability of our vehicles, giving them confidence to make the switch to electric transport.”

Resolving industry challenges

The partnership addresses one of the critical barriers to electric truck adoption: charging infrastructure.

While Scania’s BEV trucks offer lower operating costs through reduced maintenance, and produce zero tailpipe emissions for improved air quality, the success of electric commercial vehicles depends on reliable, accessible charging solutions. UON’s 24/7 remote monitoring and local support ensure maximum uptime for charging infrastructure, minimising operational disruptions.

Built to withstand Cyclone D-rated winds and designed for rapid deployment in both brownfield and greenfield environments, the UON SMART DC-FC represents a complete solution for Australian operators. The system integrates seamlessly with hybrid and renewable energy sources, supporting Australia’s broader transition to sustainable energy while maintaining the reliability that commercial operations demand.
