Transgrid has invited young women in Wagga Wagga and Yass to participate in its 2025 Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women to set them up for success in the Australian energy sector.
Transgrid said the program offers participants hands-on experience, mentorship from industry professionals, and a comprehensive introduction to the skills and knowledge required for a successful career in energy.
The five-week program, starting on 3 March 2025, is expected to equip participants with valuable insights into various aspects of the industry, from electrical engineering to project management, all within a supportive and inclusive environment.
Transgrid Executive General Manager of People and Culture, Stephen McSweeney, said Transgrid is committed to fostering diversity and inclusion within its workforce.
“Transgrid is proud to provide young women in regional New South Wales with the opportunity to join Australia’s largest transmission business and help deliver the clean energy transition.
“The Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women provides hands-on experience with real field crews and highly interactive nationally recognised training, giving participants an opportunity to decide if a career in the energy industry is right for them.”
Upon completion of the program, a select number of participants will get the opportunity to continue their training and development in Transgrid’s Apprenticeship Program, which begins later in 2025.
Transgrid Apprentice Substation Technician, Janika Walsh, completed the first Pre-Apprenticeship Program for Women in 2022 before successfully transitioning to the Apprentice Program in 2024.
“I applied for the pre-apprentice program because I wanted to leave school early and wasn’t sure if the electrical trade was for me. So, for me, it was a bit of a trial to see if it would be something I’d enjoy doing for a living,” Ms Walsh said.
“Working in the electrical industry, especially Transgrid, provides you with so many opportunities. The electrical industry is always growing and changing and there’s so many opportunities within it.
“My advice to girls who are thinking of doing the pre-apprentice program is that you should give it a shot, it’s a perfect way for you to get your foot in the door and get a feel for what kind of work is involved here at Transgrid.”
