An innovative collaboration with PowerTec and AGL is setting a new standard for agribusiness sustainability.

In a groundbreaking initiative aimed at boosting sustainability of energy supply for a rural agribusiness, Danfoss has provided its cutting-edge inverter solution to the Cadell Almond Farm project in New South Wales. The 1690ha almond orchard relied on diesel generators to power its electric pumps – an unsustainable and environmentally taxing practice with an uncertain energy cost projection into the future.

To transition such agribusinesses to a more sustainable energy model, AGL and PowerTec relied on Danfoss inverters, leveraging Danfoss’ innovative technology, strategic collaboration, and a forward-thinking approach.

At the heart of the solution is a battery energy storage system designed to support a 4.8MW tracking solar farm, effectively replacing the reliance on diesel generators most of the time. This battery system, boasting a capacity of 4.2MWh, forms the backbone of the microgrid infrastructure. The Vacon NXP Grid Converter enables the connection of the energy storage system to the AC grid while providing the following features and benefits: grid forming strength to establish the microgrid, high current overload capability to clear fault currents and instantaneous reserves to react to load changes.

Danfoss Pacific Region General Manager, Paul Holland, said, “This project represents a milestone in our efforts to enable large-scale energy-efficient solutions.

“Through collaboration and innovation, we are paving the way for a more sustainable future, one microgrid at a time.”

The successful implementation of the project at the Cadell Almond Farm will set a new standard for agribusiness sustainability, demonstrating that even in remote and disconnected areas, a greener and more efficient energy future is within reach with the right technology and partnerships.
