Tesla, the company installing the world’s largest lithium ion battery in South Australia, has reported that construction is 50 per cent complete.
In July 2017, Tesla and the South Australian Government signed an agreement for Tesla to deliver the battery within 100 days or it will be free.
Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, said, “This is a great example to the rest of the world of what can be done.
“When this is done in just few months, it will be the largest battery installation by a factor of three. To have that [construction] done in two months … you can’t remodel your kitchen in that period of time.”
Once completed, the energy storage systems from Tesla will be paired with Neoen’s Hornsdale Wind Farm.
After leading the nation in renewable energy, the 100MW/129MWh battery places South Australia at the forefront of global energy storage technology.
South Australian Premier, Jay Weatherill said, “Battery storage is the future of our national energy market, and the eyes of the world will be following our leadership in this space.”
The battery will operate at all times providing stability services for renewable energy, and will be available to provide emergency back-up power if a shortfall in energy is predicted.
