The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) has announced a new appointee to take up the position of Executive General Manager, System Design.

In this role, Merryn York will lead AEMO’s collaborative and industry-wide efforts in meeting the engineering challenges of a net-zero energy system.

Ms York will join AEMO from 14 March 2022.

A highly-experienced leader in the energy sector, Ms York joins AEMO from the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) where she currently serves as a commissioner.

Prior to joining the AEMC, she served as Chief Executive of Powerlink Queensland from 2011-2019.

Having commenced her career as a power systems engineer, Ms York brings deep industry experience in generator connections, transmission planning, regulatory investment and the delivery of major transmission projects.

She has also championed the delivery of customer outcomes as the energy sector transitions to net zero, establishing a consumer panel and Board-endorsed customer charter at Powerlink.

In her current role as a commissioner, she has continued to engage widely across the sector.

AEMO CEO, Daniel Westerman said, “I am delighted to have someone with Merryn’s experience joining the AEMO executive.

“I also want to express my gratitude and thank Nicola Falcon, our GM Forecasting, for acting in the role following the departure of Alex Wonhas.”

Ms York has a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Electrical Engineering, a Master of Engineering Science, a Graduate Certificate in Applied Law from the University of Queensland.

She is also a Fellow of the Institute of Engineers Australia, a Registered Professional Engineer and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ course.
